Our Strategy

We are redefining private equity in franchise and multi-location business investing. NRD Capital believes in the total alignment of interests among our key stakeholders – portfolio companies' management teams, fund investors and partners with extensive operational experience. Through our unique access to multi-unit franchisees and wider networks, NRD Capital is the next evolution of the franchise private equity space.

When we evaluate a brand, we look at a variety of factors. At minimum, we prefer for a brand to have at least 20 units, and to have geographic portability. We look for owners who match our values – people who are opportunistic, nimble, scrappy and lifelong learners.

While we invest in franchisors, we are franchisee-centric. We are focused on the unit-level profitability of every brand we evaluate, especially for those we invest in. Our mission is to invest in brands that offer superior products/services and compelling unit-level economics to help them strategically grow through the power of franchising. We believe that when franchisees and franchisors work together as partners, all parties win.

Our Philosophy

NRD Capital occupies a unique niche among franchise equity investors. We invest with small to medium-sized franchisors, and technology providers, infusing capital and applying our operating expertise in an effort to grow brands around the globe. NRD Capital's portfolio currently consists of 8 investments, with combined annual system-wide revenues of $1.5B generated from a mix of more than 900 company-owned and franchised restaurant locations.

Since its inception, NRD Capital has strategically invested in leading brands, including Frisch's Big Boy, Fuzzy's Taco Shop, Mike's Kitchen and The Captain's Boil. The firm acquired and privatized Ruby Tuesday in late 2017. With a keen understanding of operating margin pressures at the store level, NRD Capital examines investments at the individual unit level, working to increase potential for brand success and revenues. NRD Capital also created a smart-technology arm focused on growth-minded investments geared towards helping operators improve their profits.

The NRD Capital Difference

At NRD Capital, we look at companies not just as financial investments, but as living entities in which founders, management, and franchisees have invested substantial time and resources. Unlike other PE firms, our goal is to use both operational and financial experience to position brands for accelerated, and responsible, growth.

Our team has extensive franchise experience spanning single store operations to public companies. At our core, we are operators. Our experience encompasses every area of the franchise business model from sales, financing and real estate development to operations, marketing, HR technology and successful exit strategies. Because we are operators and we've walked in the shoes of the founder, owner, entrepreneur, executive and more, we know money isn't the answer to all business goals. Oftentimes, when businesses are at critical junctures in their life cycles, other solutions such as expertise, resources, outside perspective and seasoned guidance are just as crucial as capital to building a dynamic and sustainable business. When a business merits not only capital, but also operational and strategic support, NRD Capital shines as the partner who provides both.
